Medicinally it mainly refers to the dried ripe fruit of Ligustrum lucidum Ait., which is a member in the family Oleaceae. Berry-like drupe is oblong, 6 to 12mm long, and green when young and blue-black when ripe. Seeds are from 1 to 2 and oblong. Bloom time is from June to July and fruiting time is from August to December. Main habitat is the mountains and now they are mostly planted in the garden.
The fruit contains oleanolic acid, acetyl oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, acetyl ursolic acid, β-sitosterol, p-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol, mannitol, eriodictyol, taxifolin, quercetin, nuezhenide, oleuropein, acteoside, neonuezhenide, ligustrosidic acid, oleuropein acid, etc. It still contains polysaccharides, 7 phospholipids, and 11 kinds of elements. Polysaccharides are composed of rhamnose, arabinose, glucose, and fucose. Phospholipids account for 0.39% and among them the content of phosphatidylcholine is highest.
